Reach Outs and Further Strategies

Day 11
27th July 2009, Monday

  • Rajesh Adhikari and Bipin Dangol are back at Surkhet.
  • It has been difficult to get updates from the field volunteers as they lack 'cdma' phones (the only phones that work in the region. (Even these 'cdma' phones work for only few hours a day.)
  • In Kathmandu, Paschim Paaila representatives met with Federation of Nepali Journalists to discuss the possibility of promotion of the campaign through media. The need for facilitating trips for journalists to the affected areas was identified. Currently, there are only a few journalists in the area doing first-hand coverage on the issue and the media does not have enough of reliable means to collect stories from the affected area.
  • The coordination team present in Kathmandu met with ENPHO representatives to discuss further strategies. Some fund-raising schemes were discussed. The need to make the campaign more inclusive of young people active in other organizations was identified. In terms of fund-raising too, it was decided that Paschim Paaila should prioritize raising funds from a large mass of Nepalese community (with however little amount from each person) to increase ownership of the campaign amongst the citizens, over collecting a large amount from a single international donor.
  • An ad-hoc coordination team was formed to function for a few days: Mona Aditya (Communications), Ujjwal Chapagain (Fund-Raising), Mukesh Dangi (Field and Logistics)
  • Paschim Paaila representatives met the Rotaract Club to discuss ways that Rotaract could support the campaign. Rotaract enthusiastically expressed the willingness to participate by making efforts in fund-raising, gathering volunteers, collecting support of soap/chlorine/etc through its clubs and in many other ways.
